Designed to generate power, not move water

Our Waterless Geothermal Systems™ (WGS™) apply mature industrial technology and proven drilling techniques to create a thermodynamic heat exchange under the Earth. Lower operating complexity, predictable long-term performance, and the flexibility to deploy in water-constrained regions where other firm power sources can’t go.

Liquid Phase

Cool organic refrigerant flows from the surface into the wellbore and horizontal laterals deep underground.

Heat Transfer

As the refrigerant moves through permeable rock, geothermal heat naturally transfers into the sealed circuit, warming the fluid.

Vapor Phase

The fluid vaporizes, and thermodynamic forces drive the vapor back to the surface without continuous pumping.

Power Generation

The vapor expands directly through a radial inflow turbo expander, converting geothermal heat into electricity through a simplified power-generation cycle with minimal moving parts and low parasitic energy demand.

Repeat

The refrigerant cools, condenses back into liquid form, and continuously cycles through the closed loop.

Rodatherm’s geothermal platform is built on the same thermodynamic principles used for decades in refrigeration, air conditioning, industrial heat recovery, and power generation systems. These technologies rely on refrigerants circulating in a closed loop to efficiently absorb, transport, and release thermal energy. Rodatherm’s insight was not only to apply these proven thermodynamic principles underground, but to engineer a geothermal system optimized for rapid, scalable deployment in permeable basins. Leveraging deep expertise in drilling, well construction, subsurface operations, and energy infrastructure, our team adapted and advanced conventional techniques for a new approach to geothermal.

Extended-reach horizontal drilling techniques refined in shale oil production create residence time enabling working fluid to absorb enough heat to fully vaporize before rising to the surface.

Organic refrigerant

Our working fluid is a non-corrosive, low-GWP organic refrigerant that can be tailored to reservoir temperature conditions. 

Turbo expanders

A simplified surface-generation system converts vapor pressure into electricity with minimal maintenance requirements and decades-long operating potential.
